Aquamarine

Astrologers Notes

Planet: Uranus

Keywords: Clarity, Awareness, Vision, Freedom, Innovation

Qualities:

A stone linked with sudden understanding and freedom of mind, Aquamarine is associated with the planet Uranus. It enhances mental functions, and brings a heightened sense of truth in any situation.

Aquamarine has long been associated with the faculties required to perceive something clearly. Its mineral content amplifies the subtle electrical filed in the body, allowing access to subliminal levels of information that give a more whole understanding of any situation.

Spiritually, it has been said to awaken spiritual growth and intuition. But the awakening here is different from the intuitive influence of a stone like Amethyst. Aquamarine works directly on the nervous system to stimulate the higher mind. It allows a more evolved mental function to operate, which can grasp the entirety of something in a moment and make intuitive connections leading to advanced decision-making processes

Traditionally this stone has been associated with the clarity needed to tell true from false. It is known to heighten intuition as it has a direct influence on the pituitary gland. This clarity is mental rather than emotional, reflecting the higher frequencies available to the evolved Mind.

Through its association with the planet Uranus, this stone is known to bring awakenings. Sudden insights or understandings that lead to rapid shifts in consciousness can occur when this stone is worn near the skin. It provides a level of stimulation to the nervous system that allows us to extend our perceptions beyond what is logical or immediately known - recognizing the interconnected patterns which structure people, things and events. It can bring about what are often called “Eureka moments”.

The soothing clear light of Aquamarine reflects its capacity for emotional balance. As the Higher Mind operates beyond subjective distortions, so this stone promotes emotional balance and equilibrium as we are not troubled by unconscious emotional disturbances. Like a smooth, crystal-clear sea, aquamarine enhances our ability to gaze peacefully upon the circumstances at hand, and make decisions from a place of loving generosity.

The stone has also been used in the treatment of eye disorders, and is known to have a calming influence on the immune, glandular and nervous systems. The stone can be placed directly on the eyelids to soothe eye infections and it is said to have a harmonizing effect on both the pituitary and thyroid glands.

Myth and Legend:

As the name suggests, Aquamarine has long been associated with the sea. It was given to sailors as a form of protection on long voyages and was thought to enhance communication with beings such as mermaids.

In old legend, aquamarine was said to tell friend from foe. The stone was alleged to change colour if a person spoke a lie, so that it was used in ancient courts to sort fiction from fact.

Traditional sources also associated Aquamarine with well-being, good memory and clairvoyance. These associations all reflect the amplifying qualities that Aquamarine can have upon the mental processes and higher intuitive faculties.

Gemologer’s Notes

As a member of the beryl family, Aquamarine is aligned with other stones such as emerald and heliodor. It forms in hexagonal crystal lengths which make it especially suitable for emerald and brilliant-cut settings.

The quality of Aquamarine is determined by its clarity and colour. Stones with very few inclusions are rare and of high commercial value. Stones with a deep blue-green colour are worth even more. Large stones are very hard to source. Care must be taken when having the stone set into jewellery, as it is brittle and sensitive to pressure.

Untreated aquamarine is hard to find. Often clear specimens will be changed with irradiation to give a deeper colour, or the stones may be heated to deepen their colour effects.  This will drastically alter their therapeutic qualities. Natural aquamarine of good clarity and colour brings a high price on the market, owing to their relative scarcity. Glass imitations are often used as a substitute, as is a synthetic form of spinel. Buyers should make sure they use reliable and certified sources.
