The colour and clarity of the stone imparts a feeling of warmth and light. Its mineral properties encourage individuality, self-confidence and the kind of expansive faith needed to approach every situation as an adventure.

Citrine can impart the ability to enjoy life, seeking new experiences and forms of expression. It may also help to draw connections between various life experiences, so that we understand their deeper meaning.

Citrine has been used to stimulate the digestion. It promotes the working of the stomach, spleen and pancreas. It also has the ability to work on the nervous system, fortifying wellbeing and reducing tendencies toward worry.

 Myth and Legend:

The term ‘citrine’ was used up until the 16th century for many different coloured yellow stones. In 1546, the name was applied specifically to mean yellow quartz. Even today, citrine and yellow topaz are used interchangeably in the market, even though the two stones are quite distinct.

Citrine in its natural state is quite rare. Most often, amethyst quartz is heat treated to turn yellow and then sold on the market as citrine. Yet true citrine has a pale yellow colour that is like a lemon, hence its name.

In ancient times, citrine was said to protect against snake venom and evil thoughts. Its golden colour was said to promote sunny thoughts and a cheerful disposition.

More recently, citrine has been called the stone of abundance. It is commonly used to aid prosperity and merchants will keep a piece of citrine in their till to attract a greater flow of commerce.

Gemologer’s Notes

Citrine is a variety of quartz, and its characteristic lemon-yellow colour comes from the minute iron traces found within the crystal. Care must be taken when choosing a citrine, as most commercial ‘citrine’ that appears on today’s market is in fact amethyst or smoky quartz that has been heated so as to turn yellow.

Natural untreated citrine is rare, and large specimens are prized as well as highly valued. It can be recognized in its natural form by a characteristic pale, lemony colour, or by a trained gemologist. Some natural citrine has deeper, golden tones, called Madiera colour. This is a characteristic of the stones locality. Most heat-treated citrine will have a reddish tint.
