Myth and Legend:
Connected with the fertile and nurturing qualities of the Moon, Moonstone has long been associated with intuition, feelings, the heart and fertility. As a stone thought to bring luck and love, it is also considered to have a protective influence, especially on people sensitive to lunar cycles.
Historically, Moonstone has been associated with childbirth and fertility, so has been used to ease the pains of birth and help regulate the menstrual cycle, as well as ease the effects of menopause.
Like the subtle ebb and flow of the tides, Moonstone has been used to tune into nature’s rhythms.
In India, children are given pendants of moonstone and pearl which are worn until the age of 7. This is considered extremely beneficial in terms of helping children to grow, as Moonstone enhances the body’s natural ability to absorb nourishment
Gemologer’s Notes
Like the Moon, the stone has a white, pearly appearance. The inner layers of laminate sheen bend light, which leads to its undulating, shimmering effect.
Quality Moonstone is recognized by the band of light which moves across its surface when turned. The sharper the band, the better the quality. Rare examples also give off a star-like effect, and come in a light brown or sometimes blue colour.
Moonstone belongs to the feldspar or orthoclase group, which is characterised by the ability of its internal structure to bend light
