What is Yoga?

Yoga is a Science of Mind/Body synthesis. Combining breath and movement, yoga creates body awareness and strength whilst focussing the mind. As a form of therapy, yoga works with each individual to help achieve optimal wellness.

For thousands of years the practice of yoga and astrology have been intrinsically intertwined. Ancient yoga texts explore the relationship between the macrocosm and microcosm as experienced through the body, breath and meditation. Yoga teaches its practitioners to find balance by maintaining certain physical and mental postures. These postures generate preparedness within the mind to experience greater flow of prana (life force) as well as connection with cosmic consciousness.  

Astrology offers a similar approach, exploring the interconnectedness of all life (the macro in the micro) through intuition and empirical science. The ultimate aim of astrological enquiry is a more harmonious relationship with The Self and Universe. In this way, astrology can be understood as a Yoga of the Mind.

In fact, the traditional practice of yoga (called Hatha Yoga) is based on the fusion of male and female, solar and lunar principles. Hatha Yoga seeks to balance the masculine and feminine polarities within the mind/body to achieve greater spiritual awareness. The word “Ha-tha” combines the Sanskrit terms for Sun/Moon, to describe a system of wellbeing designed to unify these apparently polar principles. Yoga explores the dual systems of energy that run through the physical body, and how these systems can be synergized for greater vitality and awareness.

Both Hatha Yoga and Astrology are concerned with the elevation of consciousness through the application of naturally occurring principles. Ultimately, both Sacred Sciences seek greater awareness of our relationship to the source of Life or the Divine.
