How Do Astrology and Neuroscience Connect?
Astrology and neuroscience are rarely thought of as connected fields, but in actual fact they share interesting parallels that can prove useful when exploring how people understand human behaviour, personality, and decision-making.
Put simply, the idea that astrology puts forward is that there is some kind of connected pattern which structures both the cosmos and the human mind. Neuroscience has drawn similar connections.
No one knows how or why it works, but astrology has been based on the detailed observations of countless individuals, recorded across many cultures and over thousands upon thousands of years.
While critics who have no understanding find it easy to dismiss astrology, anyone who has taken the time to learn about its complexity and detailed perspective on human behaviour and environmental dynamics will see that, just like neuroscience, because we don’t understand something doesn’t mean we shouldn’t explore it.
With that in mind (no pun intended), here are a few common areas, as well as contrasts, which can shed light on the relationship between astrology and neuroscience:
1. Human Personality and Predictability
- Astrology: Seeks to explain personality and predict behaviour by the positions of celestial bodies. The position of the planets in the sky overhead can be linked to personality traits, motivations, and inclinations, which can then be used as frameworks to understand self and others.
- Neuroscience: Studies personality and behaviour through brain structure, neurotransmitter levels, and neural circuitry. Research links brain regions and neurotransmitter profiles to traits like impulsivity, empathy, and resilience, offering a biological foundation for personality. The forces which drive these biological foundations are only now being uncovered
2. Identity and Self-Reflection
- Astrology: Provides a symbolic language that encourages people to reflect on their personality, needs, and relationships. For many, astrology offers a way to contextualize experiences, giving meaning to life’s patterns and challenges.
- Neuroscience: Explains self-reflection as a function of brain processes, involving networks like the default mode network (DMN), which activates during introspective activities. Careful research within neuroscience can help us understand the role of introspection and mindfulness in mental health and personal growth.
3. Patterns and the Brain’s Need for Meaning
- Both astrology and neuroscience speak to our inherent tendency to seek and find patterns. The brain, as neuroscience shows, is wired to detect patterns and attribute meaning, an adaptive trait that aids in keeping us safe, predicting events and making decisions.
- Astrology: Offers a way to connect with regular patterns and cycles that can then be used to interpret and predict personal as well as collective events.
- Neuroscience: Studies pattern recognition as a basic cognitive function, which is essential for learning and survival. The brain’s pattern-seeking tendencies may also partly explain why people are drawn to astrology’s symbolic and archetypal patterns.
4. Focus on Timing and Cycles
- Astrology: Emphasises the timing of events through planetary transits and cycles. It suggests that these cycles influence behaviour and phases of life.
- Neuroscience: Examines how biological rhythms—such as circadian cycles, hormonal fluctuations, and seasonal changes—impact mood, cognition, and behaviour. We are only beginning to learn how certain brain cells are influenced by natural rhythms and cycles.
5. Interpersonal Insights and Relationship Dynamics
- Astrology: Provides tools for exploring compatibility and dynamics in relationships based on the interplay of astrological signs and planetary positions.
- Neuroscience: Offers insights into the neural mechanisms of empathy, attachment, and social bonding, showing how brain chemistry and neural wiring shape our social interactions and relationship choices.
While their approaches are fundamentally different, astrology and neuroscience each appeal to our desire for self-knowledge, meaning, and predictability, reflecting our need to navigate the complexities of human experience.
They also overlap when it comes to exploring how subtle gravitational and energetic forces influence biological expression and the structure of the solar system.
Whilst we are a very long way from understanding the mysteries of astrology and neuroscience, we can greatly benefit from keeping an open mid to the idea that our brains may be at least partly shaped by unseen forces, just like the planets and the stars
